Finding a beach destination that truly welcomes dogs can be harder than finding a parking spot on a holiday weekend. That’s one reason Cape San Blas, Florida, has become a favorite getaway for pet owners. With miles of dog-friendly shoreline, pet-friendly vacation rentals, and plenty of outdoor adventures, this laid-back stretch of Florida’s Forgotten Coast makes it easy to include your furry family member in the fun. My family and I had the opportunity to stay at Cape Conchs beach house courtesy of Sunset Reflections by Natural Retreats. Cape Conchs sleeps 18 so we invited some friends to come and stay with us…and bring their two dogs.

• Bring plenty of “doggy bags” to clean up after your pet. There are bag stations located at certain points down the beach, but you’re better off having your own handy too.
• Even if your pup is well behaved off-leash, bring one anyway as a courtesy for other beach goers.
• Get ready to meet and mingle! If you’re looking for dog friendly beach vacations, you’re obviously a dog lover and you’ll be happy to meet lots of other pooches and their owners during your stay.
• Visit the groomers before your trip. While Cape Conchs and most other beach rentals allow pets for an additional fee, it’s expected that you won’t leave an excess mess for housekeeping. A vacuum is provided to take care of any shedding.

Kids and dogs go together like peanut butter and jelly so we were certainly happy to have Sadie and Honey along to share in our fun. It’s hard to know who wore whom out more, but let’s just say everyone slept well at night.

Finding a rental that allows dogs is one thing. Finding one that’s actually comfortable for both you and your furry travel companion is another.

Since restaurant pet policies can change, it’s always a good idea to call ahead before visiting.

If you’re staying in a vacation rental with a full kitchen, another great option is to pick up fresh Gulf seafood and enjoy dinner on your deck while your dog relaxes nearby. Sometimes the best table in town is the one with an ocean breeze.

More Things to Do with Your Dog Around Cape San Blas

The beach may be the main attraction, but it’s far from the only place to enjoy time with your dog.

Take a leisurely stroll along the Cape San Blas Bike Path, explore nearby Port St. Joe, or enjoy a peaceful sunset walk along the shoreline. If your dog enjoys being on the water, consider renting a kayak or paddleboard for a new adventure together.

Nature lovers will also appreciate exploring nearby parks and wildlife areas, where you’ll often spot shorebirds, dolphins offshore, and plenty of coastal scenery. Just remember to keep your dog leashed where required and bring plenty of fresh water, especially during the warmer months.
