Who Was John Rutledge?

John Rutledge was a native South Carolinian who took the prominent stage in local and national politics.

In South Carolina, he served as president from 1776 until 1778 when he resigned due to his refusal to approve changes in the state constitution. He later went on to serve as South Carolina’s first governor, serving from 1779 through 1782 after the South Carolina state constitution changed its executive title from president to governor.

In 1789, Rutledge was appointed as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States and left that position in 1795 to return to South Carolina to become chief justice of the South Carolina Court of Common Pleas and Sessions.

Another notable fact about Rutledge is that he was a signer of the United States Constitution.

The John Rutledge House

Rutledge’s Charleston residence is a beautiful three-story Federal-style single house and is a fine example of American colonial architecture. Originally built in 1763, it found new life in 1989 when it became a beautiful bed and breakfast.
